Browser games for families: what to check first

Four checks before you hand over the tablet.

What you will do

  1. Look for the kid-safe sticker on the game card — it comes from the publisher.
  2. Check the tag line on the game page: the words there tell you what the game contains.
  3. Play the first minute yourself; you will learn more in one minute than from any label.
  4. Use the Co-op counter when two children need to share one screen.

SowSoy does not add its own age ratings, because inventing them would be worse than not having them. What it does instead is pass on the publisher tag: games whose publisher marks them kid-friendly carry a sticker, and the full tag list is printed on every game page.

That is useful but not sufficient. A game can be gentle in content and still be frustrating for a young child, and a game with a cute picture can still be hard enough to end in tears. The only reliable test is a minute of watching.

Two other things worth knowing. First, nothing on this site asks for personal information, so there is no form to fill in and no account to lose. Second, nothing plays audio until the game itself starts, so a quiet room stays quiet until somebody presses play.

If two children are sharing, look for turn-based games on the Co-op counter. Games where players take turns end arguments more easily than games where everyone moves at once.
